Vein care

More than half of the population will be affected by venous insufficiency.

Dr. Hould offers the non-invasive treatment of varicose veins through sclerotherapy. Using small, normally painless needles, she injects a mild sclerosant solution that irritates the walls of problematic veins, causing them to close. The body reabsorbs and clears the veins within a number of days, the treated areas quickly heal, and legs soon look and feel healthier.

WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?

In your body’s circulation system, veins return blood to your heart as arteries carry blood away from your heart.

Veins that become varicose have gradually lost the ability to maintain healthy blood flow. They first appear as thin lines beneath the surface of the skin, and develop into clusters resembling fine tree branches. These clusters are known as spider veins. With time, the condition can progress and cause bulging veins at the surface of the skin. Beyond the protrusion of unsightly veins, venous insufficiency can cause discomfort, pain, and a feeling of constant heaviness in the legs.

WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS?

Over half the population will experience varicose veins in their lifetime. Medical research has documented a number of probable contributors that include:

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and menopause
  • Age: the frequency and severity of varicose veins increase with advancing age
  • Occupation: venous insufficiency occurs more frequently in people who work in standing or seated positions for long periods of time.
  • Obesity
  • Multiple pregnancies: the pressure exerted by the uterus on blood vessels can impede blood flow.

IS THERE A CURE?

There is no known cure for venous insufficiency. However, regardless of the severity of your varicose veins, there are a number of non-invasive, non-surgical options available to help slow the progression of the disease and improve the appearance of your legs. We offer sclerotherapy, the safest, most reliable and time-tested therapeutic procedure available for treating spider and small varicose veins.

WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution directly into the afflicted vein, causing the vein to collapse. Your body channels blood flow to the surrounding veins, while gradually absorbing and clearing the injected vein. Within a month, treated veins usually disappear.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT PROCESS BEGIN?

During your first consultation, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire on your medical history, including important considerations such as allergies, recent illnesses and medications, and previous vein care procedures. We will examine your veins, and answer any questions you may have concerning your care. We will determine whether sclerotherapy is the right path of treatment for you, and if so, establish a treatment plan.

HOW LONG DO TREATMENT SESSIONS LAST?

Treatment sessions usually last from 20 to 30 minutes. The quantity of veins treated in a session will vary depending on their size, location, and the general state of your health.

HOW MANY TREATMENT SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of treatment sessions varies for each patient. For the aesthetic treatment of varicose veins, an average of 2 to 6 treatment sessions is usually necessary. In cases where problematic vein areas are more numerous, clustered or advanced, the number of sessions required for proper treatment may be higher.

As venous insufficiency is a chronic condition, an annual vein care check-up is also recommended.

ARE THE TREATMENTS PAINFUL?

Given the small needles used in sclerotherapy, treatments are normally pain-free. Patients may feel a slight pin-prick and mild burning sensation during injections, but any discomfort quickly subsides.

DO THE TREATMENTS HAVE ANY SECONDARY EFFECTS?

There may be some light bruising, swelling, or spotting in the injection areas immediately following a treatment session. These minor effects usually subside within 1 to 2 weeks, and will be explained in detail during the initial consultation. Patient awareness and education are among our highest priorities.

DO I NEED TO TAKE ANY TIME OFF WORK?

No. We recommend that you walk for 15-30 minutes after the treatment to enhance circulation. You can resume your normal daily activities, including work, immediately after your visit.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

Results usually become visible within 2 to 6 weeks post-treatment. Any post-treatment secondary effects usually disappear within the same timeframe.

HOW CAN I MAXIMIZE TREATMENT SUCCESS?

While you can and should resume regular daily movement and exercise, if possible, avoid prolonged sun exposure, hot baths, spas, saunas and hot compresses for two weeks following treatment. We also strongly recommend compression therapy to maximize the benefits of sclerotherapy.

WHAT IS COMPRESSION THERAPY?

Simply put, medical compression stockings have calibrated elasticity from bottom to top. They put constant, gentle pressure on the lower legs to facilitate blood flow and valve closure. As circulation gets a helpful boost, legs feel less heavy, and in more advanced cases of varicose veins, less painful.

Wearing medical compression stockings during the day is one of the best ways to slow the progression of venous insufficiency.
